A multiplayer typing race for teams

TypeDerby is a free browser game for team building. Everyone types the same short paragraph, and every word typed correctly moves your cartoon horse a length down a shared track. Up to 15 people race at once, a race takes about five minutes, and nobody needs an account or an install to join.

How a race works

  1. Open the gate. You create the race and paste one link into the chat. Racers pick a horse name and they're in the field — no account, no install. Up to 15 horses, and a single racer is enough to start.
  2. Under starter's orders. When the field looks right you close the lobby, then start the race. A five-second countdown runs off the server, so every racer gets exactly the same "Go".
  3. There is no text box. Everyone races the same paragraph — around 70 words — and it stays hidden until the off. Then it lights up as you type. Nowhere to paste, nothing to click.
  4. A length for every word. A word only counts typed exactly right — capitals and punctuation included. Get one wrong and your horse stalls until you fix it. The time you spend correcting is the whole penalty.
  5. Photo finish. The race ends when every horse is home — or when the host ends it early. Results give you the Win, Place and Show podium, plus everyone's time, words per minute and accuracy.

Three chips. One pot. Top three pay.

Betting is optional — the host ticks it when creating the race. Everyone watching gets a seat at the rail, the racers included: three free chips each to bet on Win, Place and Show. Every chip lands in the same pool and the price moves as they do, so fewer chips on a horse means a bigger payout if it comes in. The split is sixty, twenty-five, fifteen, first to third.

Entertainment only — chips have no cash value, cannot be bought or topped up, and nothing carries to the next race. No real money is involved at any point. Best with 6+ horses and ~10+ bettors.

You're the host

You set the race up, hand out the link, close the lobby when the field looks right, start the race, end it early if you need to, and run the shared screen. You can also require a team name, so racers enter a team alongside their horse nickname — which is what makes it work as a team-building game rather than a typing test.

Questions

Do I need an account to play?
No. There is no login, nothing to install and nothing saved. You join from a link, pick a horse name, and play.
How many people can race at once?
Up to 15 horses on one track, and a single racer is enough to start. Any number of extra people can watch.
Is TypeDerby free?
Yes, entirely. Nothing to buy, no subscription, no account.
How long does a race take?
About five minutes start to finish. The paragraph is around 70 words, so the typing itself is usually under a minute.
Can people watch without racing?
Yes — there's a spectator view built to survive a screen-share, and with betting enabled watchers get three play-money chips so they have a stake in it.
Is it good for remote team building?
That's what it was built for: nothing to install so nobody is blocked at the door, about five minutes end to end, and an optional team-name field so racers enter alongside their team.
